Seasonal Review: Winter 2021 (Part 2)

Here we go, new anime season round two. Other anime I have missed are also getting their second seasons this… season! Namely Cells at Work! and THE PROMISED NEVERLAND, so that’s fun. I’ve also been spending time playing catch-up with other shows (namely Ninjago as of when I’m writing this), and also potentially preparing to start doing something with my life again (!!!!????), namely tutoring for a bit before I likely fuck back off to college in the fall (hopefully!). This post covers anime that premiered between January 9th and January 13th.

Horimiya (ホリミヤ)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Teen

This show’s a high school romcom. Basically our two main characters Hori and Miyamura (hence Horimiya) end up discovering that the face they put on at school is rather different than the one they have at home, and end up developing a friendship of some sort. Insert a potential love triangle here, a misunderstanding there, cue romcomness. Looks like it has potential to be very cute, if it can keep this energy up for the rest of the series.

Dr. Ramune -Mysterious Disease Specialist- (怪病医ラムネ)

Personal Rating: Teen

People get supernatural problems when their emotions are out of whack. Enter This Guy, the doctor who cures those problems by helping with their emotional crises. Episode 1 features a young girl who cried mayonnaise. Episode 2 will feature (checks notes) someone with a chikuwa for a penis. This is not a joke post. At any rate, it’s an interesting-looking episodic psychological anime, give it a go if you’d like. I certainly will. But due to the nature of these Mysterious Diseases, there is the potential for some of it to get rather squicky!

SK8 the Infinity (SK∞エスケーエイト)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Teen

Skateboarding! High school kid likes hanging out in an underground skateboard ring of some sort. Canadian bloke shows up, ends up tagging along, shenanigans ensue, oh wow canada boy’s snowboarding experience is coming in handy in a very weird way(?) Don’t duct-tape your feet to a skateboard kids. Just from episode 1 alone I’m not interested, but again maybe if it becomes very good a few episodes down I could pick it back up. Maybe.

Kemono Jihen (怪物事変)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Teen

Detective from the big city ends up investigating strange goings-on in a rural town. Namely, the circumstances behind the deaths of some mutilated animals, and that of certain ostracized boy. Who turns out to be a kemono (monster), just like the detective happens to be. Huh. How about that. Anyways, this looks fun so far, but fair warning for lowkey body horror.

Skate-Leading Stars (スケートリーディング☆スターズ)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Everyone

For some reason all of these episodes get released two weeks early on Funimation compared to their actual TV date? Why. Anyways when I went to watch this that meant what was out by this point was episode 3, which was good because after watching the first episode my brain went “hmm not sure maybe I’ll watch the next one see where it goes” and oh hey look there it is, available for me! How convenient.

Anyways I learned what skate-leading is today. It’s basically just team figure skating. Not that complicated really. Main character’s a bit of a prick, hopefully he’ll become less of a prick(?) The anime’s keeping me interested for one reason or another though at any rate.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (無職転生 ~異世界行ったら本気だす~)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Teen

Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nopenopenopenopenope. I don’t care what happens after the baby period of his reincarnated life I can’t fucking watch this anymore. I’m out. Someone else write the review.

Idoly Prideアイドリープライド

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Everyone

This anime drags you along at a very fast pace through whatever the plot is. Which is kind of surprising that the pacing’s so weird, considering that it is apparently an original anime. Lost interest halfway through and closed the tab. Something about becoming an idol, an AI ranking system for idols(???), and for some reason this bland-ass dude is there too.

EX-ARMエクスアーム

Personal Rating: Teen

I don’t tend to review the animation quality in these sorts of posts, but right off the bat the animation for this anime is just… kinda bad? Like it’s all CGI, which isn’t bad in and of itself, but it’s a lot of lazy non-animation of the models, unsynced lip flaps, and just a lack of expressiveness in the characters in general. And the plot(?) doesn’t really help make up for the fact that the animation’s shoddy. Dude dies, ends up becoming like a not-quite AI brain in the future of 2030 or something, shenanigans ensue??? I don’t fucking know. I gave up halfway through the episode.

WONDER EGG PRIORITY (ワンダーエッグ・プライオリティ)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Teen

This is a psychological little anime that blurs the lines between reality and dreams, about girls working through their Mental Issues. Some of these mental issues are… Very Rough! This episode alone has violence, bullying, body horror, (neon-colored) bloodiness, and the aftermath of a suicide attempt shown on-screen. Proceed With Caution. This one is… a bit too graphic and surreal for me to want to continue based on this episode alone? It looks like it could be cool though, if handled well.

Redo of Healer (回復術士のやり直し)

HIDIVE Rating: TV-MA | Personal Rating: Adult

There’s kind of an unspoken hierarchy between the anime streaming services I’ve noticed, in terms of what they get for licensing. Crunchyroll tends to get most of the best anime, with Funimation in a close second. Other streaming services that don’t specialize in anime (YouTube, Amazon, Hulu, w/e) tend to be more of a grab-bag, but usually nab pretty decent ones.

Then there’s HIDIVE.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but when it comes to the simulcasts, HIDIVE almost always gets the porn.

In terms of a backlog, they tend to have a lot of interesting older content. Some of it’s live-action too! But they usually get maybe two simulcasts a season, and they’re probably the ones that nobody else wanted. Such as this show, which is about a guy who had the power of healing and was abused for his power as a result, got addicted to some sort of magic drugs, but managed to outwit his abuser lady and rewind time to his youth so that if he would remember his previous attempt, he could make sure that he wouldn’t end up to the same fate. Anyways about 18 or so minutes into the episode the censor bars come out. (Look forward to when HIDIVE happily announces that the uncensored version of this anime is available for streaming in a few months or so!) And then a minute or so after that the video player stopped working and I didn’t feel like refreshing the page to continue. So that’s that!

There we go, that’s the animes. The only other one I really feel needs mentioning is VLAD LOVE, which had an early premiere in December but doesn’t start regular broadcast until February, or something?? I haven’t watched it but apparently it’s about vampires and also the title’s a palindrome in Japanese (ぶらどらぶ). Heehee. As always, you can track my progress with a show and see my evolving feelings of it as it progresses over on my MyAnimeList anime list. Continue to stay safe out there and all that, and I love you all (except for Devin).
