Seasonal Review: Winter 2021 (Part 1)

So, welcome to 2021. The actual start of the new decade, probably. Seven or so years from the year 2038 problem. This anime season starts while the thought of Funimation’s imminent acquisition of Crunchyroll looms over my head. Hopefully I don’t have to explain why the nigh-monopolization of anime streaming is bad to you. I’m not going to get into it anyways, because I’m exhausted by life. (Really ideally anti-trust bullshit will stop it from going through, but I’m not optimistic. If it didn’t stop Disney acquiring Fox, why would it stop this? sigh) Anyways, here we go. This post covers anime that premiered between January 4th and January 8th. (There were a lot of advance premieres this season, but I’m going to count all of those starting from their “actual” start dates.)

Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies moved to a starter town? (たとえばラストダンジョン前の村の少年が序盤の街で暮らすような物語)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Everyone

Like most anime adapted from light novels with overly descriptive titles, this one is fairly straightforward in what it’s about. A kid from the last dungeon boonies moves to a starter town. He considers himself weak (compared to his family and neighbors), but he is actually ridiculously powerful and strong (compared to the people in this much more ordinary town). Because he considered himself weak, he wanted to become a soldier to become strong. No need to worry about those entrance exams though, right? He’s stupid powerful, how could he possibly fail? (You get zero cookies for correctly guessing that the end of episode 1 indicates that he appears to have failed.) Seems interesting, but also smells of protagonist-kun-is-going-to-get-himself-a-lowkey-harem-of-cute-girls-by-the-end-of-the-season-because-fuck-you-it’s-anime. So I think I’ll pass this time around.

Otherside Picnic (裏世界ピクニック)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Teen

Kinda isekai but not quite. Sorao has occasionally found herself in the “Otherside”, another strange world with monsters from urban legends in it. On one visit there, she encounters another person there for the first time–Toriko. Toriko’s much more outgoing than Sorao, and also she has a gun. And was able to kill one of the “wiggle-waggles” that appeared in front of them, and gets some strange mysterious loot out of it. So once the two end up back in the regular world, Toriko approaches Sorao again with a proposition to go hunt more wiggle-waggles, since she knows someone who is fairly interested in getting more of the strange loot obtained from it. So the two begin an unusual partnership for research and profit in journeying into the Otherside. The first episode had a bit of body horror, and also will in general probably feature more freaky shit throughout the story. It is categorized as a shoujo ai also, which tends to make me go eyes_emoji by default. So, here we are.

Gekidol (ゲキドル)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Everyone

Gekidol is… an idol show, of some sort. It takes place in a post-global catastrophe world (but not a complete apocalypse, like there’s just some giant craters in some cities and some weird scifi powers, I guess?), and it involves using the magic of holograms to make people happier via acting. Or something. Wasn’t really feeling this one.

I★CHU (アイ★チュウ HALFWAY THROUGH THE IDOL)

Personal Rating: Everyone

Here comes another idol anime based on an idol mobage. Have twenty-odd characters dumped on you within the span of five minutes, and try to get invested from there. Good luck! In general, idol series have a lot to live up to in terms of quality since I got spoiled by IDOLiSH7, and this simply wasn’t it. Hope they don’t get kicked out of school or whatever though I Guess.

Hortensia SAGA (オルタンシア・サーガ)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Teen

Something something fantasy mobile RPG anime that failed to cohesively introduce me to the setting or plot and I don’t recall any of the last 20 minutes I watched. Something something not all stories work for all mediums. Next

Heaven’s Design Team (天地創造デザイン部)

Personal Rating: Everyone

God got tired of trying to design animals, so he outsourced the work to a team of angels. That’s it, that’s the premise. A comedy about a product design team, where the products are animal species. It’s funny and is also educational about various animals and how they function. And the ping-pong tree sponge shows up! Love that dude. What more could you want out of this sort of anime? (For the lady angels to not be designed Like That. That’s what I want.)

2.43: Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team (2.43 清陰高校男子バレー部)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Teen

The title’s a reference to the height of a regulation volleyball net.

Anyways, sports anime strikes again. This time it’s volleyball club, with some very flawed people in it. Childhood friends part and reunite in high school, they both have played volleyball, but one takes it much more seriously than the other. A little too seriously, in fact. Which is why he moved back to his hometown. This anime looks like it could potentially be rather heavy, so that’s my potential heads-up warning.

Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki (弱キャラ友崎くん)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Everyone

If you want to watch a show about someone re-adjusting to real life after being absorbed in gaming for a long time, watch Recovery of an MMO Junkie. If you want to watch another show about a Manic Pixie Dream Girl inexplicably giving attention to Boring Average McJoe, watch this, I fucking guess. Premise being that Real life sucks so bad and video games are better, ends up discovering that one of his classmates with a vibrant offline life is ALSO a gamer (wow! a gamer AND a girl!), and she tries to encourage him to enjoy the game that is Real Life. I Guess. (Yeah I didn’t like this one.)

So I’m a Spider, So What? (蜘蛛ですが、なにか?)

Personal Rating: Teen

To put it frankly, this anime gives me the heebie-jeebies. It’s an isekai where an entire class (plus their teacher, for some reason) was reincarnated into another world. Our protagonist got reincarnated as a spider though. She’s not the only one who had a bit of a mix-up happen though, in this episode we also see that at least one other student was reincarnated into some sort of non-spider fantasy creature, and one guy was reincarnated into a girl (which rubs me the wrong way for reasons you can probably guess). And as previously mentioned, their teacher also got reincarnated to be around the same age as her students. Which also rubs me the wrong way, for reasons you can also probably guess. But none of those were what initially turned me off from this anime, as most of this was revealed after the halfway point of the episode. Because the first half was instead focused solely on our spider protagonist, doing various spidery things to survive. Such as seeing the other spiders do cannibalism, and then her herself do cannibalism. And then use her web fluid, and then catch, fight, and eat a frog. Which was all very gross and I had a bad time. Perhaps if you’re less squeamish you might find this enjoyable? I don’t know.

BACK ARROW (バック・アロウ)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Teen

Original anime with a plot I mostly failed to follow. They’re in a giant Truman show bubble or something, or in a Flat Earth, at any rate there’s a Wall surrounding the entire land, and nothing lies beyond it (allegedly). Shit falls from the sky, one of them was a person, cowboy aesthetic, naked man names himself Back Arrow. Maybe once the plot’s established a few episodes down the line I’ll find out it’s good and come back to it. Though as it stands… basically no substance.

Scar on the Praeter (PROJECT SCARD プレイタの傷)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Teen

Scard is about… um. So these guys have magic tattoos that grant them immunity to bullets (but only sometimes) or some shit, um, they’re in a special zone with different laws in Tokyo, um, they use a lot of CGI to help with animation shorthands, um. The aesthetic was interesting, I guess. I could not really tell you what just happened though.

The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter (俺だけ入れる隠しダンジョン)

Personal Rating: Teen

She breasted boobily down the street. Then she brought up some harem-esque bullshit and I closed the tab.

Anyways, the premise is probably whatever the title is mostly, it’s not an isekai (I think), MC is a mediocre dude who is a low-ranking noble, who got his future job taken from him because a higher ranking noble interfered. I didn’t watch any more of it as you can probably tell, so I can’t tell you much else.

Well, that was the first batch. When I first wrote that blurb up top it wasn’t January 6th yet, and there have unfortunately since been other things hanging ominously over my head since, which I assume most of you are aware of. Everyone take care of yourselves, doomscrolling is not the same as being informed and it doesn’t help anyone, stay hydrated. Watch things you enjoy, not garbage anime like I’ve been doing for the last few days (peppered with Ninjago here and there). Play some EpicMafia or Jackbox with your friends. Or Among Us, that’s what the kids are doing today isn’t it?

Speaking of which as a treat for making it this far I’m going to write a very very brief review of the Lego Ninjago Movie I finally saw the other day, or rather the first and foremost issue I spotted with it. Namely, who the fuck is the intended audience? It takes enough of a different direction from the TV show to make it distinctly its own thing, so it’s clearly not for people who enjoy the story and dynamics of the TV show. But it also does a completely shit job of introducing you or explaining to you the dynamics of the world, meaning that new audiences are likely to be lost. I think the main problem is that it was trying to take the same approach as they did with the Lego Batman Movie, where they skipped most of the introductory stuff under the assumption that cultural osmosis would save them, and it worked for the decades old superhero that is Batman. It did not for this. There are plenty of other grievances I have, but I’ll just keep it at that for this.

Also a new episode of Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series dropped for the first time in two years today.

Have a good weekend everyone!
