Seasonal Review: Summer 2020

This anime season in terms of new premieres is much more sparse than previous seasons, due to a combo of 1) anime from last season that started airing but then had to go on hiatus and got pushed back until this season to finish and therefore pushing back other anime that would have aired during those times, and 2) anime that was planned to premiere but got pushed back until next season or later due to pandemic complications. What we got left with was uhhh a fair chunk of ecchi. So this is fun!! Overall there’s only about a dozen new anime premieres this season.

SUPER HXEROS (ド級編隊エグゼロス)

Funimation Rating: TV-MA | Personal Rating: Adult

Sooooo aliens have invaded the earth and are removing people’s horniness which is bad for the birthrate I guess, and also as soon as someone gets their “H-energy” taken away from them they become depressioned. Luckily our great hero has a magic watch that transforms his horny into power to fight against the evil aliens. Also their clothes keep coming off and other fanservice bullshit crap. Dumb and stupid. If I wanted to watch someone with a magic watch beat up aliens Ben 10 is right there and also better. No.

Lapis Re:LiGHTs (ラピスリライツ)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Everyone

Fantasy world! Main character Tiara has just arrived at prestigious magic school and reunites with her friend Rosetta. However, she and all of her peers are at a risk of getting expelled fairly soon if they don’t get their shit together academically. Apparently this is an idol anime as part of a multimedia project, though it’s not at all obvious just from this first episode. Some obnoxious boob animations here and there and nothing immediately gripping but I’m willing to give it a few more episodes to see if it gets its footing.

Monster Girl Doctor (モンスター娘のお医者さん)

Personal Rating: Teen*
(*i didnt make it far enough to gauge how much stupid fanservice we were getting and if that qualify it for the adult category or not)

Less than a minute into the episode and we’re given a shot of our titular monster girl doctor fondling a minotaur girl’s titties in order to medically examine her I guess. No. No. Just no. If you want a thinly veiled monster girl ecchi go ahead I guess. But. Just. No. I’m out.

The Misfit of Demon King Academy (魔王学院の不適合者~史上最強の魔王の始祖、転生して子孫たちの学校へ通う~)

Personal Rating: Teen

The full translated title for this is The Misfit of Demon King Academy ~History’s Strongest Demon King Reincarnates and Goes to School with His Descendants~, so there’s your basic plot summary. History’s strongest demon king reincarnates and goes to school with his descendants. And it gets fairly graphically violent fairly quickly. So fair warning there. Basically we’ve got ourselves a cocky overpowered protagonist. Who apparently grew up to like a teenager in one month?? Did his mom really just say that? Okay sure why the hell not. I have very little faith it will stay at any sort of quality, but I’ll give it a few episodes.

The God of High School (ゴッド・オブ・ハイスクール)

Personal Rating: Teen

Webtoon and Crunchyroll have teamed up once again to bring an anime adaption of one of Webtoon’s, er, webtoons. This one is about a national high school MMA tournament! Which is in fact, called “The God of High School”. Our protagonist is ridiculously strong, like he can fucking. Pedal a bike fast enough to keep up with a thief on a motorcycle. But that’s just what webcomics are like. I’m subscribed to some webtoons and get emails from them weekly of updates to the webtoons that I’ve been throwing directly into the trash for well over a year now. I have no fucking clue where I left off. I’m scared. Anyways our protagonist ends up working with two other equally wild folks to catch motorcycle thief and they’re all combatants in the big MMA tournament preliminaries. And sports anime ensues. They keep calling it an MMA tournament but weapons are allowed and correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the whole thing about martial arts was that it’s… not weapons…? Last season’s Crunchyroll Webtoon original was very enjoyable, so I’ve got high hopes for this one.

DECA-DENCE (デカダンス)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Teen

Lot of worldbuilding thrown at you very fast; basically humanity is now confined to the mobile fortress Deca-dence and our protagonist Natsume wanted to get a certain job but due to her physical disability (a la Ed Fullmetalalchemist) ends up working a different job that’s considerably less glorious: armor repair, except for the first five years she gets to clean the armor instead. However Plot Happens and she and some of her coworkers end up outside Deca-Dence, in the heat of battle, and in danger. Turns out her boss used to be a soldier and saves their asses until they can get back inside Deca-dence tho. Basically uhhh lots happening here but it looks neat!!

Japan Sinks: 2020 (日本沈没2020)

Netflix Rating: Unknown | Personal Rating: Adult

This anime is an adaption of a novel from the 70s, and the way it modernizes it already places it squarely in the realm of fiction by having it occur shortly after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Got released all at once in typical Netflix fashion but I only watched the first episode because I’ve got other shit to do with my life. Anyways, a series of powerful earthquakes hit Japan. It gets rough. You ever experience an earthquake? I live in California. Nothing as extreme as what’s being depicted here, but basically in general they’re. They can do a lot of damage. And, in this case, also a lot of death and fatal injury. Natural disasters suck. And this anime isn’t shying away from any of that shit. The series focuses on the survivors trying to recover, and specifically on one family of four who were initially separated when the disaster occurred. And, on the accidents that occur as a direct result of the earthquake. It’s… it’s graphic! Fair amount of blood, death, dead bodies, etc. A little too heavy for my tastes, but it looks decent, at least from this first episode.

Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out! (宇崎ちゃんは遊びたい!)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Teen

yaaaay we’ve reached more of the ecchis. something something overly entergetic college girl who is petite in just about every aspect except for her huge badonkahongaroos wants to try and get her childhood friend to be less of a loner. i guess. it doesn’t matter. if you’re watching this you’re definitely here for the badonkahongaroos. so have fun with that i guess

Rent-A-Girlfriend (彼女、お借りします)

Personal Rating: Teen

This one isn’t officially or unofficially categorized as an ecchi, but. It’s still definitely very horny. Anyways, college dude gets dumped, in his despair turns to using a dating-slash-rent-a-girlfriend app. And to his surprise ends up meeting up with a hot girl for his paid date. And has a good time, until he realizes that she was, obviously, putting on a show. I don’t know what you expected to get out of paying a girl to go on a date with you. Anyways he gets mad enough to set up another date with her in an attempt to vent his frustration on the matter in a very genius move. He confronts her on it, and she, understandably, snaps at him for being a jerk. Unfortunately hijinks ensue of his grandma collapsing, the two of them both going to the hospital (as he still has time with her), him introducing her as his girlfriend, his grandma getting excited and bringing over his friends to meet her grandson and his girlfriend, one of whom has a chance of being her grandma, who is also an in-patient at the hospital, and who she hasn’t told about her rental girlfriend job. Anyways the two of them end up hiding together under some bedsheets. They get busted anyways and end up having to pretend to be a couple in front of their grandmas. They part on… not terrible terms? At any rate. He declares he’s done with pretend dating forever, we get some stupid fanservice shots, and he runs into her unexpectedly on campus. Romcom time. I have my reservations but here I go anyways, I guess.

Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time (ピーター・グリルと賢者の時間)

HIDIVE Rating: TV-MA | Personal Rating: Adult

oh this one’s just an ecchi. random dude named peter grill wins a fighting contest. he’s got a fiancee. too bad i guess everyone’s mad horny for him now. how will he remain faithful to his love?????? also his fiancee doesnt know what sex is. i guess. babies come from storks. i do not know how this is a struggle for him. but i guess i dont understand a lot of basic things due to not experiencing sexual attraction so what do i know maybe this is a common dilemma. also i think the title is supposed to be a reference to like, post-coital clarity or something. who cares. at least the episodes are only 12 minutes i guess.

Gibiate (ジビエート)

Personal Rating: Teen

So. This anime is about a global pandemic in the year 2030. However, unlike, uh, current events, this pandemic turns people into monsters instead of turning them into corp Okay no that one was too soon. And also about two samurai from the year 1600 who end up in 2030. Plot ensues. Not really my thing, but could be yours.

Mr Love: Queen’s Choice (恋とプロデューサー〜EVOL×LOVE〜)

Personal Rating: Everyone

Otome mobage anime adaption. MC is now in charge of her late father’s struggling TV station. Meets a celebrity by chance, almost gets hit by truck-kun, saved by some guy who stops time to save her and mentions the term “evolver”, no big deal. She meets up with a scientist and she learns that evolvers is a term used to refer to, well, evolved people who have gotten basically superpowers. She quickly finds herself wrapped up in some superpower related bullshit, and also the sudden loss of their primary investor, who turns out to be the guy who saved her by stopping time. She vows to improve the TV station without his help, roll credits.

There we go, got around to watching all the anime while also getting myself way too invested in like ten other things. Finally. In other news, my sister recently put together her own WordPress blog, featuring more coherent and academic analyses of various media. Mostly Disney and fairytale-related things. Her posts are much much longer than mine but are worth the read, if you think any of that sounds interesting. Also I just like showing off my familys’ work. Check it out if you’d like! I should probably go eat lunch now.
