Seasonal Review: Winter 2020 (Part 1)

So. This review is less timely than the other two prior were. Don’t really have much else to say about that. Just that anime season starts line up very nicely with when my college terms start, and that I just felt like binging a bunch of RedLetterMedia instead of watching literally anything else for two weeks. Because of that, there’s going to be less summarization on these because I’m certain everyone and their mom already has done that.

Anyways, here we go. This Seasonal Review entry covers anime released from January 2nd to January 8th, along with Obsolete, which aired on YouTube in its entirety on December 3rd.

OBSOLETE

YouTube Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Everyone

Alright so I’m not gonna continue with this one. It looks like a generic mecha anime but in the future and politics and whatever. The episodes are on the shorter side at around 12 minutes each, so if any of this sounds up your alley go for it I guess.

Asteroid in Love (恋する小惑星(アストロイド))

Personal Rating: Everyone

This anime is a cute little slice of life focusing on two girls hoping to find an asteroid in the earth sciences club. Not sure if it’ll have much of a plot, but it’s wholesome, and can also be interpreted as gay (though that probably won’t go anywhere in canon). Gonna keep watching and see where this goes.

Darwin’s Game (ダーウィンズゲーム)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | HIDIVE Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Adult

So first off, this anime has a LOT of blood and violence, and opens with someone getting killed, so be warned. It’s also got a bit of gratuitous nudity at the very end of this first episode, but no idea if that’s in future episodes or not. It’s a drama about a guy who gets roped into a game where it’s kill or be killed and what he does to try and not be killed and not kill. Which I read somewhere is similar to Future Diary but I have no idea because I never watched that. Gonna continue with this one, while occasionally covering my eyes when it gets violent…

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (映像研には手を出すな!)

Personal Rating: Everyone

I heard good things about this anime and saw it floating a lot around tumblr, so I had a feeling this one would be good, and it is!! There are many different anime styles and all of the girls have stylized appearances and it’s just so visually pleasing, and the plot is super cute, about three girls who want to make an anime (well, two of them do, the third is just hoping for getting money out of the whole thing). I am ABSOLUTELY going to continue watching this unique anime.

ID: INVADED(イド:インヴェイデッド)

Funimation Rating: TV-MA | Personal Rating: Teen

This anime starts of fairly bizarrely, with our main character literally falling apart into multiple pieces, and many others are also seen in fragmented states, so if that sounds too freaky it may be best to give this one a pass. There is also a repeated visual of someone stabbed in the chest. It’s about a detective diving into an “id” well (a pun on the psychological term and well (well in Japanese is pronounced ido) to try and solve a real-time murder mystery. It’s like that one film, Minority Report? Where they’re trying to stop crimes before they happen. I think. Anyways I’m curious to see where this one will go.

pet(ペット)

Amazon Rating: 13+ | Personal Rating: Adult

Uh. I have no idea what just happened in this episode tbh. It involves people who can fuck with memories and perception, which is probably why the episode is so confusing. Presumably if I watched a few more episodes I’d understand it? But it’s not interesting enough for me to continue. As the anime does show people’s subconsciousness, it has some very disturbing imagery and violence shown. There is also one brief baffling scene that made me wonder if I was accidentally watching a BL anime (again). But apparently it’s seinen. Okay.

Seton Academy: Join the Pack! (群れなせ!シートン学園)

Personal Rating: Teen

I saw a screenshot of this anime floating around showing the horrible character design which you can see on that image to the left. Basically all of the girl animals are human with animal ears or whatever, and all of the boy animals look like, well, actual animals wearing clothes. As soon as i saw that this anime was classified as a harem I knew it wasn’t gonna be great. Anyways the premise is that a human boy is attending a school full of animals, and he hates animals with a passion. You can probably predict where this will go. And you’ll probably be right. Basically this one’s a no from me.

Somali and the Forest Spirit (ソマリと森の神様)

Personal Rating: Everyone

So first of all the backstory for this world is that humans got genocided into near extinction. Which can understandably be uncomfortable for some, so I thought I’d put it out there. The premise is that a golem finds a young human girl and is hoping to find any remaining humans while having her disguised as a minotaur. Personally I LOVE stories where someone’s just kind of roped into becoming a parental figure, and the aesthetic of the show is beautiful as well. It’s just… so cute seeing this allegedly emotionless creature becoming a dad to this spontaneous little girl. It’s just so wholesome and cute… I like it a lot. <333

Sorcerous Stabber Orphen (魔術士オーフェンはぐれ旅)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Teen

Orphen is a sorcerer who dropped out of Magic School™ five years ago when his close friend did a bad experiment and accidentally transformed herself into a dragon. I think. Anyways he gets wrapped back up in trying to save his friend and also just be able to get by in the world. It looks like a fun little adventure series that I’ll be continuing to watch for… various reasons.

BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense. (痛いのは嫌なので防御力に極振りしたいと思います。)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Everyone

Kaede Honjou, going by the alias Maple, starts playing a new VR MMO where she chooses to put all of her points into defense. Throughout the course of the episode her defense points and resistance abilities increase, and other players begin to take notices of her shielding abilities. I think it’s nice that while MMO anime like this are common, this one features a girl protagonist. However, it’s not really interesting enough for me to watch it as it airs, though I might go back and binge it later.

number24(ナンバー・トゥーフォー)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Everyone

number24 is a sports anime about rugby. You can probably guess how the anime’s going to go if you know anything about sports anime based on that alone. The main character, Natsusa Yuzuki, was a high school rugby ace who got into an accident and was stuck in the hospital for 6 months. Since he can no longer play due to his injuries, he has now has become the college team’s manager. If you’re into muscley pretty boys this anime has got that in spades, especially in the opening. I’m usually pretty neutral on sports anime, and this one is no exception.

I was gonna review Drifting Dragons next but couldn’t find it anywhere. So, onwards!

Plunderer (プランダラ)

Funimation Rating: TV-14 | Personal Rating: Teen

In a world ruled by “numbers” that count various life statistics, Hina has been searching for the legendary “ace” for five years as her mom’s final request. However, she gets swindled out of all her numbers sans one by someone claiming to be the ace. She is then rescued by Licht, who turns out to be the true ace. This anime has a few bits of obnoxious fanservice, along with Licht earlier in the anime being kind of a perv to Hina. The plot seems interesting enough though so I’m gonna give it a few more episodes.

Well, there we go, first half of seasonal review only about a week and a half late. See you relatively soon with the second half!
